The right to belong – disability discrimination law in education

I came across and interesting article written in 1997 by the then Australian Disability Discrimination Commissioner, Elisabeth Hastings. She makes a very interesting argument for the state’s responsibility to protect, among all other rights, the right to belong.

She suggests that,

“The right to belong – in a particular school, or in our community in general – is not one that can yet be taken for granted by people who have disabilities.”
