Cancer causing deaths
With 563 cases for every 100,000 people, cancer remains the leading cause of death in Canada. Lung and bronchus, breast, prostate and colorectal cancer are the four most diagnosed cancers, accounting for about half of the new cases annually. Trends differ by age. While incidence of colorectal cancer among males and females age 50 and older has been decreasing incidence among those aged 40 – 49 has trended upward at 1.8% each year from 2002-2022.

Senior driver training
Researchers reviewed studies of 1480 drivers between 65 and 93 living in the community. Those who received on-road training plus education or off-road cognitive training, video training and use of a driving simulator in programs between 1 and 10 weeks in length linked to a potential decrease car crashes and better driving skills. Medium to long program lengths and session numbers and length also seemed to make a difference.

Cottage country lakes
A concerning environmental report on the fate of microplastics within three rural lake catchments in Ontario’s cottage country found that, on average, 57% of incoming microplastics were actually retained in the terrestrial environment surrounding the lake. Of the remaining 43% that had entered each lake, 37% stayed put. To date most microplastics research has focused on oceans with reports showing microplastics transferring into seafood products.
