Accessibility Statement for abilities.ca

Abilities Magazine and the Canadian Abilities Foundation are committed to providing an accessible, inclusive online experience for all visitors, including people with disabilities. Our goal is to ensure that everyone can access our stories, resources, and programs with dignity, independence, integration, and equal opportunity.

Who we are

Abilities.ca is the digital home of Abilities Magazine, Canada’s lifestyle magazine for people with disabilities, published quarterly by BCS Communications Ltd. for the Canadian Abilities Foundation. We serve a cross‑disability audience of youth, adults, and seniors in every province and territory, sharing lived experiences and practical information on accessibility, health, employment, technology, caregiving, policy, and culture.

Standards we aim to meet

We strive to make abilities.ca conform to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA (and we continue to monitor updates toward WCAG 2.2 AA), which are widely recognized as the international standard for web accessibility. As an Ontario‑based organization, we are also committed to meeting the requirements of the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) and its Integrated Accessibility Standards.

Measures to support accessibility

To support accessibility on abilities.ca, we are working to:

  • Use clear headings, consistent navigation, and logical page structure to support screen readers and keyboard users.
  • Provide meaningful alternative text for images and graphics where they convey important information.
  • Ensure sufficient colour contrast and readable font sizes for text and interactive elements.
  • Support keyboard navigation for menus, links, forms, and media controls without requiring a mouse.
  • Caption or transcribe audio and video content, and clearly identify links that open documents or external sites.
  • Review new features and content with accessibility in mind and address identified barriers as resources allow.

We also work to reflect accessibility and inclusion principles in our editorial approach by centreing lived experience and promoting barrier removal in everyday life.

Ongoing improvements

Accessibility is an ongoing, iterative process, and we recognize that there may still be barriers on abilities.ca. We are committed to reviewing our website on a regular basis, prioritizing fixes that have the greatest impact for users with disabilities, and consulting with our community to better understand gaps and opportunities for improvement.
