Agency Offers Sexuality Counselling

The mandate of the Calgary Birth Control Association (CBCA) is to provide information, support and referrals to meet the needs of all individuals in the area of sexuality and sexual health. It supports the celebration of the whole person.

The concept of counselling people with intellectual disabilities came from CBCA’s philosophy of inclusivity and diversity. CBCA is one of the first mainstream sexual and reproductive health agencies committed to providing services to people who have intellectual disabilities. Its proactive staff are determined to serve all community members.

CBCA staff recognize that positive sexuality and sexual health is an area in which the rights of people with disabilities are still routinely overlooked and repressed. CBCA provides a space and an opportunity for people with disabilities to discuss and learn more about their sexuality in a holistic way. This helps to empower them, and results in healthy and informed choices for the client.

Referrals come from clients, caregivers, parents and friends, and from other community agencies. Each client’s needs are unique and treated as such. The personal service is a trademark of the agency’s ability to recognize the value of each client and their situation.

There is no cost to these services, as the work is funded by The Calgary Community Lottery Board. CBCA can be reached at (403) 283-5580; TTY: (403) 283-5541; e-mail: generalmail@cbca.ab.ca; or visit www.cbca.ab.ca.
