Housing Initiatives in New Brunswick

A joint committee of non-profit housing groups, federal and provincial government housing departments, and disability advocacy groups have been moving forward in New Brunswick with ideas to help address the lack of affordable, accessible and decent housing for persons with disabilities and others living in poverty in New Brunswick. Such groups are hoping to ensure at least basic accessibility which would help facilitate independent living by reducing risks to adults with physical disabilities.

With this in mind, progress on the issue stems from a report that has been submitted to the provincial government proposing many new options for funding. Some of these include: providing shared equity, creating creative community partnerships, and implementing a possible housing trust fund concept. Efforts by the aforementioned groups are now underway to develop a concrete pilot project based on a housing trust fund model. All of the stakeholder groups are excited and enthusiastic about these different ideas. They are looking forward to seeing them spring to life in the near future.
