Vaughan Evans of Vancouver, B.C., has taken a project in personal development to the next level.
Evans, who is an amputee, hired a personal trainer a year ago to teach him to skip rope. He was interested in finding out whether or not he could learn to skip while alternating feet.
Evans’s artificial foot made it difficult to hop high and long enough to clear the ropes. However, after giving the problem some thought, his trainer helped him to come up with a method called "lift-kick," which uses a combination of lift, kick, swing, crossover and tap movements and allowed Evans to jump rope successfully.
Now Evans is enthusiastic about sharing what he has learned with other disability organizations around the world. He possesses a video demonstrating the lift-kick technique, and believes it can help people who are amputees or have other disabilities to learn to partake in this enjoyable and healthy activity.
Disability groups to which Evans has distributed information thus far include Save the Children in Great Britain, which works with children who have lost limbs due to land mines. Evans invites anyone else interested in copies of the video, or getting more details on the lift-kick method of skipping rope, to write to him at: 2181 W. 38th St., Ste. 401, Vancouver, BC, V6M 1R8
