A member of the national team for six years, Paul was introduced to the sport through his rehabilitation program eight years ago.

A top-ten ranking on the international circuit before the 1996 Paralympics is Paul Johnson’s goal. Another goal is to play the perfect match.

Paul Johnson is a leader in the sport of wheelchair tennis in Canada. Aside from his personal goals, Paul hopes his involvement and his attainment of a high world ranking will encourage more people to become involved in the sport.

Being Canadian Singles Champion is certainly a great source of pride for Paul, but competing in the Paralympics in Barcelona in 1992 and making it to the finals at the Swedish Open the same year are two of his most cherished accomplishments. Paul’s greatest memory since becoming involved in wheelchair tennis is playing American tennis great, Randy Snow, at the World Team
Cup in Irvine, California, in 1991.

Even though Paul enjoys the camaraderie between the players and countries when he competes, he does enjoy a few things besides tennis. When not competing, Paul can usually be found fishing or weight training. He is also a dog lover and feels that his dog forces him to be somewhat responsible, preparing him for the greater responsibility of a family in the future.

The Canadian Wheelchair Tennis Team will compete in the 1996 World Team Cup in Melbourne, Australia, February 5-10. the Canadian delegation will include players Paul Johnson, Mario Perron and Phil Rowe, and coach Barry Bruce. Look for results in the summer issue of ABILITIES.
