A Generation in Motion

These days it’s hard to fathom, but barely a generation ago many people with disabilities were locked up, warehoused and denied access to the community— let alone the whole world. But times have changed, and a quantum shift from institutionalization to inclusion has paved the way, for many, towards a much greater level of social and economic participation.

Passing of the Torch

Canada is losing too many of its bright lights—individuals who have led the way for those of us striving toward a level playing field for citizens with disabilities. The sad paradox is that the population of people with disabilities is dramatically increasing, while some of our strongest leaders are no longer with us. The need for a new generation of champions is becoming very clear.

Protect Your Bones

Dr. Sophie Jamal As with many issues in the lives of people with disabilities, the health of our bones generally takes a back seat to the primary condition with which we must contend. This is understandable, given how demanding conditions like spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis and the like can be. But, it’s also dangerous, because osteoporosis — a decrease in bone quantity and quality — can mean serious damage, often without any signs until a fracture occurs.

MY WORD

I cannot take full credit for this article, although it does reflect my most personal sentiments. It was Jack Pearpoint of the Marsha Forest Centre, working with Maurice Voisin, who largely penned this article. Maurice is one of a small group of friends who helped ensure that a gentleman by the name of “Edgar” experienced an end-of-life experience filled with dignity – and surrounded by compassion.

Important Survey on End of Life Services for People with Disabilities
The Canadian Abilities Foundation (CAF) is supporting Hospice Toronto in an initiative known as the Transitions Project. The objective is to help gain a greater understanding of the needs of people with disabilities as they deal with end of life issues. Hospice Toronto is inviting people with disabilities and those who care for them from across Canada to participate in the survey. Your point of view is needed and would be very much appreciated.
