Residents of Peterborough enjoy an excellent quality of life in an attractive setting. They welcome visitors from around the world to share the many recreational opportunities in the area. It was established in 1825 by the Commissioner of Crown Lands Peter Robinson, who was selected to oversee the immigration of approximately 2,000 Irish settlers to the area. Peterborough has grown into a thriving city with a population of 70,000, with an additional 60,000 people in the surrounding County. It has become the regional centre for services in the Kawarthas.

One of the nicest features of Peterborough is that many of the attractions do not involve a major commitment of time, money or energy. There are many events and sights worth seeing that are very suitable for persons with disabilities, their friends and families. Some of the highlights include the Peterborough Liftlocks, the Canadian Canoe Museum and the Festival of Lights at Del Cray Park. Peterborough’s great natural setting includes numerous small parks and picnic resting spots along the Otonabee River in the Trent Canal that are quite accessible.
